How to Choose a Graduation Dress

A graduation outfit has to work through more than the walk across the stage. It may be worn under an academic gown, during seated parts of the ceremony, in formal photographs and again at a graduation dinner or party. Instead of choosing by color alone, begin with the school requirements and gown, then compare length, fabric, neckline and fit.

Start with the Dress Code and Graduation Gown

Some schools follow a white-dress tradition, while others allow any appropriate color or style. Check the ceremony instructions before narrowing the collection. The gown will cover much of the dress, but the neckline, sleeves and hem may remain visible when it is zipped or open. If possible, compare the dress measurements with the approximate length of the gown rather than relying on the product photograph alone.

Choose Mini, Midi or Maxi Length

A mini dress usually remains above the bottom of a longer academic gown and transitions easily into a graduation party outfit. Check the seated length and skirt construction, especially when the ceremony involves stairs or extended periods of sitting.

Midi dresses provide more coverage and can work for ceremonies, family photographs and dinner afterward. The hem may extend below the graduation gown, so compare the two lengths and make sure that the visible difference looks intentional.

A maxi dress creates a more formal silhouette and may suit outdoor ceremonies or evening celebrations. Check the total garment length, footwear and stage access carefully so that the skirt does not interfere with walking or stairs.

Decide Whether to Wear White or Color

White is a common graduation choice, but it is not a universal requirement. If your school requests white—or if it is simply your preferred look—browse the dedicated white graduation dresses collection. It separates white mini and midi options from the broader graduation assortment.

If color is allowed, the current RIHOAS edit also includes black, blue, pink, red, yellow, green and neutral options. Consider the school rules, gown color and where photographs will be taken rather than assuming one color works for every ceremony.

Compare Fabric, Neckline and Construction

Satin, chiffon, lace, jacquard, cotton and textured fabrics behave differently under a graduation gown. Review the composition, lining, stretch and closure on the individual product page. A lighter-looking fabric is not automatically cooler or less sheer, and two dresses with the same length can fit differently when one is woven and the other has stretch.

The collection includes square, halter, V-neck, boat-neck, one-shoulder and sweetheart styles, together with sleeveless, short-sleeve and long-sleeve options. Consider how the neckline and sleeves sit beneath the gown, but make the final decision from the dress measurements and product photographs.

Plan for the Ceremony and Celebration Afterward

If you want to wear one dress throughout the day, choose a design that still feels complete once the academic gown is removed. A defined neckline, visible texture or considered sleeve shape can give the dress its own identity without depending on the gown. For a more celebration-focused alternative, compare party dresses; for a stricter event dress code, browse formal dresses.

Graduation Dress FAQs

Does a graduation dress have to be white?

No universal rule requires a white dress. Some schools have a tradition or stated dress code, while others permit different colors. Follow the ceremony guidance first.

Is a mini or midi dress better under a graduation gown?

A mini may remain hidden beneath a longer gown, while a midi provides more coverage but may remain visible below it. Compare the actual garment and gown lengths before choosing.

Can I wear a maxi dress to graduation?

Yes, provided the dress code allows it and the hem does not make walking or using stairs difficult. Check the length with the shoes you intend to wear.

What should I check before selecting a size?

Use the measurements on the individual product page and review the fabric stretch, lining, closure, neckline and back construction. Do not assume that all dresses in the same labeled size fit identically.
